Autumn energy is contracting, a time when nature rids itself of what is not needed. When trees shed their leaves, animals prepare for hibernation and we start thinking about letting go of what is not aligned with our real needs.
This contracting energy is represented by the Metal Element and is about feeling vital and strong. It is about choice, getting rid of the excess and only keeping what is right for us. Its about being decisive and connected to yourself and your needs.
Feeling Vital with the Metal Element
- Represented in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) by the colour WHITE, SILVER or BLACK.
- Metal energy is about contraction, elimination and the perfect time to detox in preparation for winter.
- If the Metal Element is in balance you will breathe easy and eliminate waste efficiently.
- Taking in our life force with a trusting mental attitude, absorbing what we need and getting rid of the rest
Metal element is expressed in the body by the lung (yin) and large intestine (yang) qi meridians. In Remedial Yoga Therapy (RYT) we use Metal postures to strengthen the lower body and relax the upper. It is about feeling vital and alive. Metal classes are perfect for early morning.
Is your upper body out of balance with the lower? Try this RYT test.
Lay down on your back with your legs straight out. Pop your hands on your belly and see if you can sit up. Now lay back down and see if you can lift both legs up in the air.
If the moves are both equally as easy (or equally not) then you are balanced in the upper and lower body.
When eating in Autumn we want to go for foods that support our Lung Health, keeping those awful change-of-season colds at bay.
Many foods have an essence that supports the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine, especially spicy, white foods. An oriental therapist might regularly prescribe these foods for patients when trying to build strong Lung function. Think cauliflower soup and mash – cauliflowers even look a bit like your lungs and are great for maintaining healthy lung function.
Health & Lifestyle
Because Metal is all about choice, Autumn is a time to get rid of things you no longer need and give yourself some much needed breathing room! Stimulate your Large Intestine function by throwing out those twenty-year old clothes or notebooks from fifth grade.
Rug up in windy and cold weather, especially your chest and neck and the lower back.
