Our immune system….funny how we don’t really think about it until were ill. Did you know that a weak immune system is a significant contributor to most chronic diseases? Our immune system keeps us healthy and helps ward off pathogens like the flu or a cold and many other disorders. When we get sick we usually reach for the over-the-counter medications to help relieve our symptoms. By looking to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) instead, we can be proactive about supporting our immune system in a safe and natural way.
How we feel every day is a good indicator of how our immune system is working. Eating well, getting the right amount of sleep and drinking the required amount of water can sometimes not be enough.
According to TCM, the body is protected by something known as the Wei-Chi (pronounced “way chee”). The Wei Qi, or Defensive Qi, is comparable to the immune system in western medicine. It acts as the first line of defence when the body is under attack from external pathogens. With strong and abundant Wei Qi the body is capable of fighting off bacteria and viruses. Extreme stress, lack of sleep and a poor diet can all play into how strong the body’s Wei Qi is and how well it performs. People with Wei Qi deficiency are prone to allergies and frequent colds.
Keeping our immune system strong
There are multiple tools in the TCM practitioner’s kitbag to assist in keeping the immune system strong and healthy. These include acupuncture, moxibustion, acupuncture, herbs, cupping and nutrition. In our Natural Therapies Clinic, Remedial Yoga is also be used in conjunction with TCM to complete the whole-body health experience.
Each of these tools has a similar effect on the body. TCM can regulate immune function, while also treating the underlying causes of the disease. This is done by reducing the symptoms, speeding up the healing, decreasing excess phlegm, decreasing inflammation, and boosting the immune cells (T cells) in the body that help ward off invasions.
